50th anniversary of JFK's Tampa visit today

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) -- Today is the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's visit to Tampa

Lynn Marvin-Dingfelder, who produced a documentary called JFK in Tampa, the 50th Annivesary, says President Kennedy's visit to Tampa November 18th, 1963, was the city's first by a sitting president.

“He had a motorcade that traveled 28 miles in an open convertible. And the nice part about that was everybody who wanted to, had a chance to see him. They either lined the streets or they went to the venues where he spoke,” Marvin said.

Her documentary includes interviews with many Tampa residents and notables who saw President Kennedy on that day. There's also a JFK exhibit at the Tampa History Center next Friday.

Kennedy visited MacDill Air Force Base, Al Lopez Field and the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory before leaving five hours later. He was assassinated four days later in Dallas. There will be a special ceremony Monday at MacDill.
