TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- A USF pre-med student and son of a local ob-gyn is accused of deliberately giving his pregnant girlfriend a drug that made her miscarry, resulting in the death of their unborn child.
According to a Federal grand jury indictment unsealed in Tampa federal court, 28-year-old John Andrew Welden labeled a bottle of the drug Misoprostol (brand name Cytotec), as the antibiotic Amoxicillin, then told his girlfriend that his father, Dr. Stephen Welden, prescribed it for her. The woman, identified as R.L. in the indictment, then miscarried, ending the pregnancy.
The death of the fetus is treated as murder under federal law because prosecutors believe it occurred as part of the commission of another crime. Welden could be sentenced to life in prison.
