ST. PETERSBURG (970 WFLA)-- The city of St. Pete wants to demolish the Pier, of course, and replace it with the Lens... but first it has to get permission from the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Corps is taking public comments through May 3rd at Pier comments link .
St. Pete mayor Bill Foster is confident that the Corps will approve the demolition.
"We need to cross our t's, dot our i's, and be very transparent through the whole process", Foster says, "and we have been."
The Corps oversees potential environmental impact on the Bay. Foster says they have to make sure the demolition is environmentally friendly. He insists the Lens design will actually have less impact on the Bay and its wildlife, because it has a smaller shade area than the current design.
The Corps is taking comments through May 3rd. The Pier is set to close May 31st.
