Federal Judge In Tampa Considering Bond In Abortion Pill Case

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - John Weldon will remain in jail, at least for now.

A federal magistrate is considering releasing Weldon on bond pending the outcome of his federal case, but indicated he believed Weldon could be a flight risk if released.

The 29-year-old is charged under the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act, accused of tricking his pregnant girlfriend into taking an abortion pill.  Remee Lee, who was several weeks pregnant, says she was lead to believe she was taking an antibiotic.  She lost the baby days after taking those pills.

Investigators say Weldon forged the signature of his dad, a well-known OB/GYN, then switching the label on the abortion drug to make Lee think she was taking an antibiotic.

In court documents, text messages between Weldon and Lee reveal Weldon's attempt to convince Lee to get an abortion.  In the messages, she refused and asked Weldon not to hurt her or the unborn baby.
