TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - The Channelside district has been in limbio for the past few years.
The owner of the downtown Tampa entertainment district defaulted on a $27 million dollar loan. Businesses bailed. Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik even had a plan to buy it, then backed away from the project because of the legal entanglements between the previous owner and the bank which forclosed on the property.
Enter, Clearwater-based Liberty Group, which is making plans to buy Channelside, as long as the deal is approved by the Tampa Port Authority later this month. The Port Authority owners the land underneath Channelside.
The Liberty Group's Punit Shah wants Channelside to be transformed into a mixed use complex. But he also wants to hear from the public.
Wednesday, there'll be a town hall meeting on Channelside's future at the Florida Aquarium. It begins at 5:30 p.m. and lasts to 7 p.m.
