Lakeland Kidnapping Ends Violently on East Coast

LAKELAND (970 WFLA) -- A Lakeland woman is safe after an overnight ordeal.

According to the Lakeland Police Department, 26-year-old Elizabeth Hamilton was kidnapped from her work last night at the Lakeland Square Mall by her ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Brett Curtis. She was reported missing by her mother.

LPD put out a statewide alert on Curtis' vehicle and it was spotted in South Daytona around three a.m. by a police officer in the area. The officer recognized the car and tried to pull him over but he sped off. Authorities chased Curtis through Volusia and Brevard counties while he fired shots back at them.

The chase ended just before four a.m. on I-95 in Brevard County after deputies used stopsticks on the car, blowing out all of the tires. Lakeland Police Sgt. Richard Rose said at that point Hamilton was able to get out of the car and run to deputies. The driver, believed to be Curtis, then took his own life.

Rose said it took the cooperation of several agencies to bring Hamilton home safe.
