Local Tiger on the Mends After Surgery

CLEARWATER, Fla. (970 WFLA/ AP)- It's not unusual for a cat to get a hairball, but a 400-pound tiger needed help from Tampa Bay area surgeons when he couldn't hack up a basketball-size hairball by himself.

Bluepearl Veterinary Partners reports that a 17-year-old tiger named Ty underwent the procedure on Wednesday at its Clearwater clinic. Ty was initially brought to Bluepearl on Monday after not eating for nearly two weeks. Doctors found the 4-pound obstruction but determined it couldn't be removed with a scope because of its size. Surgery was selected as the preferred method.

Ty is cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Seminole. The non-profit animal rescue group mainly serves by assisting Florida Law Enforcement with animals that have been seized.
