With hurricane season a little more than a month away, Floridians might want to check their risk for flooding. New research released today from Bankrate.com shows only 51% of Americans know their home's correct FEMA flood designation. The standard homeowner's insurance policy does not cover flood damage. However, a 2012 poll by the Insurance Information Institute shows that only 13% of Americans carry get flood insurance. Doug Whiteman with Bankrate.com says flood insurance might be much cheaper than you expect, with the average policy costing around $50 a month.
