St. Pete police investigate fatal pedestrian hit and run crash

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) – St. Petersburg police are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit and run crash.

Police said a pedestrian, 49-year-old Phelestine Larose Smith of St. Petersburg, was walking eastbound Friday Nov. 29 at 7:40 p.m. across 28th street at the alley between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue South.

Police said a small, four-door sedan, possibly silver in color, was northbound in the curb lane of 28th Street when the vehicle failed to yield to the pedestrian and struck her.

Police said the pedestrian was projected onto the vehicle and then fell to the pavement. The vehicle stopped briefly, police said, then took off at a high rate of speed westbound onto 4th Avenue South.

Police said Smith suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The St. Petersburg Police Department is looking for a small to mid-sized four door sedan; light, possibly silver in color that should have damage to the front end, hood and/or windshield. Officers said anyone who may have seen the crash, or who may have information about the vehicle or the crash is asked to call 727-893-7780.
