Tampa Attorney Wants State Criminal Charges In Abortion Deceit Case

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Tampa attorney Gil Sanchez says the loss of his client's unborn baby was "horrific and unimaginable"  He says there should be state criminal charges against the man who caused it.

Sanchez represents Remee Lee, a 26-year-old who says her boyfriend, John Weldon, tricked her into taking abortion pills after he learned she was several weeks pregnant.  She miscarried a few days later after taking what she thought were antibiotics.

Weldon, whose father is a Lutz obstatrician, faces federal criminal charges.  But state law doesn't recognize the rights of a fetus that cannot survive outside the womb.  Sanchez hopes state lawmakers can change that law.

Lee has filed a civil suit against Weldon and may pursue charges against his dad and anyone else who had anything to do with the loss of her baby.

Lee's parents also attending the latest press conference.  Edward Lee says Lee's family hopes there'll be "the full weight of the law" against Weldon.
