LAKELAND, Fla. (970 WFLA) - An appeals hearing took place Tuesday in Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack's office. Sgts. Rusty Longaberger and David Woolverton are asking to be reinstated.
They were fired July 15th as part of the ongoing sex scandal that has rocked the department. Several other officers have resigned.
Longaberger and Woolverton have denied allegations they forced a former crime scene analyst to have sex. Sue Eberle, who has spoken publically about the scandal, says she had sexual contact with as many as 20 officers and city employees.
Jim Diamond of the West Central Florida Police Benevolent Association tells 970 WFLA News Womack has 14 working days to consider the officers' appeal or uphold the firings. If she denies the appeal, the officers can take their case to Lakeland City Manager Doug Thomas. If that doesn't work, the PBA can consider sending the appeal to arbitration.
